FB has sparked some real connections for me, including a couple of surprising re-connections with people that would literally not have been possible without the technology. I have heard the term "asynchronous friendship" applied, and while it's a bit snarky, I think it captures the void that FB fills in part--updates from people we might not need (or even want) to have detailed conversations with, but which convey enough useful info to allow us to reach out in a higher bandwidth medium (such as the phone) when desirable.

Ric, great points. Similarly when old Tivoli friend Jamie T's husband fell seriously ill last week, the news spread like wildfire on FB, and soon enough there were countless well wishes posted. It allowed Jaime to focus on her husband and still know that there was a larger community out there concerned and informed. Now if we could only stop the spread of the Mafia-wars type crap....
